Project description

The starting point for this design was to integrate the three functional areas of the Dornier Museum (exhibition, hall 1, hall 2) under one roof. This results in an architecturally impressive structure which can hold its own between the other large buildings at Friedrichshafen airport.

Compared with the other entries in the competition, this increases the visibility and enhances the visual impact of the museum. Furthermore, by combining halls 1 and 2, the flexibility of the museum operations and of any future uses is increased.

The land the museum is built upon is directly adjacent to the airport area.  A large front yard creates a link with the airport's taxiing routes and connects the museum directly with the ongoing airport operations. In this way, the museum connects with the present and with the state of the art. Towards the south, another curving area links the museum premises to the roads.

Under a protruding roof, the different museum areas are structured. The curved shape of the front yard is reflected and becomes visible on the southern facade. On the eastern side of the premises, around 150 parking spaces will be arranged in a separate area.

The approx. 120 parking spaces of the Dornier museum will be integrated into the landscape park. A multifunctional area continues the geometry of the exhibition area on the outside. Apart from the parking positions of the museum aircraft, the outdoors area also includes a museum café. The northern apron is designed to suit the requirements of modern airport operations.

If necessary, the individual parking spaces for can be rented out separately. The design of the open space is complemented by a walk-on roof and a viewing platform for the airport runway.
